Montgomery Advertiser Business Q&A (January 9, 2006)
By Deborah Willoughby
Montgomery Advertiser

" Keith McCormick and his partner have adapted their surveillance-camera business to give parents a chance to watch their children at daycare centers. The system, which uses passwords and pays close attention to security, allows parents to log on to watch their children for 10-minute sessions.

What's unique about your business?
We offer online viewing and surveillance for establishments. Businesses and homes use our camera system for loss prevention, vandalism and safety. We are also focusing on daycares around the area to allow parents to view their children while they play and grow. My wife and I wanted a way to watch our daughter at daycare during the day, so this idea turned into a business.

How do daycare operators feel about the cameras?
We see the ones that do not want it in there as ones I might be leery of using. The others look at it as another service to be provided to parents.

How did you get started in business?
I am a software application developer by trade, but I've always wanted to own my own business. I started the company a year ago, mainly focusing on PC support. One of our customers needed the ability to view their office from a remote location and also record digitally all actions caught by camera. That turned out to be an instant success. After my daughter was born, I wanted to see her all through the day. So I decided to explore the new market idea. I love what I do because I feel like I am helping the working mom or dad feel somewhat like they are still watching over their child while being away.

Do you have a day job, too?
I am a software applications developer. This business keeps me busy at night and on the weekends, though. With a family, I want to make sure I have all of my ducks in a row before I make the big leap.

What resources did you use in getting the business going?
This business has been built with our own money, nothing borrowed. I designed a Web site for a company and used those funds to build the business. My partner, Josh Hartin, and I have not paid ourselves as of yet while we build capital. As far as advice, I worked for a company called ICS while beginning the business. I owe a good bit of my entrepreneurship desires and abilities to the CEO of that company, Steve Goldsby. He guided me with tips when PC-Tier1 was in its infant stages.

What inspires or motivates you?
I would have to say God motivates me, and my daughter, Isabella, and wife, Melanie, inspire me. Also, the ability to employ good people and assist them in supporting their families is a big inspiration and a great motivation.

What are your long-term plans?
As far as my business, I want to grow it into a business where PC-Tier1 is a family name that really provides family needs. I look at this as being a field that would create lots of job opportunities within the area. I eventually want to franchise this business to grow it nationwide.

What book have you read recently?
"Rich Dad Poor Dad," "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and "Elmer the Patchwork Elephant." I read that to my daughter. It's her favorite.

Are there charities or community groups you support?
I am on the board of Neighbors INChrist. It is a great organization that gives back to the community by helping victims of crime while ministering God's word.

What's the best advice you've received?
I think the best advice I have received is from Dave Ramsey. He once said, in a conference at Frazer, that a good bit of businesses fail because of the debt they incur before earning the first dime. I made it a mission not to borrow a dime, and I will continue to have that mentality throughout the life of the business, however long that may be."

Crenshaw Advertiser Business of the Week (January 26, 2006)
By Katie M. Sanders

"  PC-Tier1 of Montgomery is our featured business of the week! PC-Tier1 specializes in providing, selling and installing surveillance cameras for companies. Most of their clientele include convenient stores, restaurants and jails, but they started off in a different direction.

When the small business began in January of 2004, it was a PC maintenance service, but quickly changed venues. Most of the senior partners in the company are men with families, who wanted a way to check up on their children. So PC-Tier1 began installing surveillance cameras in daycares. The selling point, and deal-sealer to most, is the fact that their cameras can be accessed from the internet, allowing watchful parents to keep an eye on their children all day long. While you are busy in the middle of afternoon paperwork, you can log onto their website and see your little ones having snacks, or playing with others.

Their business started to grow through word of mouth, and with their increasing popularity they are working diligently to find a way to make daycare surveillance more affordable for daycares and moms and dads. PC-Tier1’s most popular model is around $2,200. But as it stands, you can log onto any computer and go to the company’s website where you enter a customer login that allows you to view your camera. This allows you to check on your business after business hours, or even when you are on vacation.

The three senior partners - Joshua Hartin, Keith McCormick and Ronnie White - in the company all bring a different piece to the puzzle that makes their business work. Josh Hartin is a magnificent engineer and has perfected a system of installation for the company. Keith McCormick is their computer specialist who ensures that the website, live camera, and ability for customers to observe their cameras in work run smoothly. Law enforcement specialist Ronnie White is key in utilizing the most effective camera positioning and surveillance techniques to ensure customer satisfaction.

The company has done well since it began two years ago and looks forward to expanding from this point. In the near future, the company hopes to provide customers with access to camera archives, and they also hope to make payment plans available to them. The senior partners at PC-Tier1 are proud of their small roots, but would love to see the company grow into a franchise where they could enjoy taking on even more employees and extending successful business opportunities to others interested in the industry."
